Oak Forest High School proudly highlights the exceptional contributions of senior Bengal, Tanya Wiseman, whose leadership and compassionate heart have left an indelible mark on the school community.
"Leading with Heart"
Tanya Wiseman is not only a student leader but a driving force behind the "Leading with Heart" initiative at Oak Forest High School.
"Being part of 'Leading with Heart' has been an incredibly rewarding experience," Tanya shared. "It has allowed me to connect with my peers and the community in meaningful ways, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact." As the President of the National Honor Society (NHS) and Executive President of the Student Council, Tanya has seamlessly integrated her leadership roles with her commitment to the "Leading with Heart" program.
According to Leading with Heart, congenital heart disease (CHD) affects 1 in 100 babies born, with 30% of these children requiring open-heart surgery as their only option for survival. Despite the prevalence and severity of CHD, only 1% of CHD research funding is directed toward pediatric cases. However, every dollar donated makes a significant impact. Thanks to generous contributions and a 2.5x matching multiplier, the organization has transformed $2 million in donations into $5 million, all of which goes directly to helping these children and supporting lifesaving research and care.
Philanthropic Leadership in Action
This year, Tanya is spearheading a shoe drive in partnership with the "Leading with Heart" program. The drive aims to raise funds for congenital heart disease research, reflecting Tanya’s deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. "This initiative is close to my heart because it brings the community together for a cause that affects so many lives," Tanya said. Her efforts in this initiative are a testament to her compassionate leadership and dedication to philanthropy.
In addition to the shoe drive, Tanya is organizing a community talent showcase breakfast in February. The event will feature local talents like Conquer Dance from Orland Park and provide a free breakfast buffet. "Organizing the talent showcase has been both challenging and rewarding," Tanya explained. "It’s incredible to see the community come together to support a cause, and knowing that our efforts are making a difference keeps me motivated."
Academic Excellence and Aspirations
Tanya’s academic journey is equally impressive. Driven by a passion for medicine, she has participated in the Northwestern Discovery Program and plans to pursue neuroscience at the University of Chicago. "I’ve always been fascinated by the complexities of the human brain," Tanya explained. "Studying neuroscience brings me closer to my dream of attending medical school and eventually specializing in dermatology."
Tanya credits her successes to the love of her parents, Sarah and Adam. “I owe my success thus far and in the future to them, and I aspire to become like them. I am truly blessed to call them my parents. Love you guys.”
Praised by Educators
Assistant Principal Michael Boniface describes Tanya as "a standout leader" who embodies the spirit of "Leading with Heart." He notes, "Tanya is like having another staff member. Her dedication and ability to inspire other students are remarkable. Tanya never boasts or expects recognition or praise-although she most certainly deserves it! Her truly caring nature is evident in everything she does, and I feel so lucky to know her. Tanya has a very bright future ahead of her, and we are all beyond proud of not just her accomplishments-but more importantly of her stellar character and the person she is!"
Additionally, Kerry Pecka had this to note, “
Tanya is an incredible asset to Oak Forest High School. Her drive and passion for making the school and community a better place is unmatched. She is constantly looking for ways to give back and is a role model for all students. We have been so lucky to have her strong leadership in Interact over the past few years and she has truly encouraged others to want to be a part of the school community to create meaningful change.”
