Bremen High School District 228’s science departments from Hillcrest High School and Oak Forest High School hosted their very first STEM nights in April.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is an umbrella term used to group together the distinct but related technical disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
On April 20, faculty, students, families, and scientists alike came together at both Oak Forest and Hillcrest to learn more about the world of science. The events had over 20 activities that offered an interactive experience for attendees of all ages to enjoy. Our students across the district were able to assist attendees while they conducted many exciting STEM activities.
The inaugural event at Oak Forest included activities using bath bombs, slime, oobleck, and ice cream. Attendees also had the chance to dissect owl pellets and were even able to drive a robotic vehicle created by our Robotics Team. Kyle Sterling, son of Ed Sterling, Assistant Principal of Student Services at Bremen High School, brought many exotic animals; specifically snakes, lizards, and reptiles. Guests had a memorable evening and really enjoyed learning about the different species.
Although similar events were held by the Hillcrest science department in the past, this year they hosted over 25 activities for attendees to explore. These activities included an extra large see-saw, Tetris boxes, elephant toothpaste, popsicle stick catapults that launched paint, and more. Guests had a great experience interacting with students, and many faculty brought their families for a Hawk family night.
“We wanted to create a community event that would bring families into our schools to interact with their children to engage in activities in a science setting,” said Vivian Turek, Science Department Supervisor. “We had over 150 families. Parent and student feedback was positive, and we are excited to host another similar event in the future.”
The event included music, prizes, light refreshments, and goggles for all who attended.
