Hillcrest High School Special Education teacher, Theresa Kelsey, is being honored as one of the Illinois State Board of Education's "Those Who Excel" award recipients! We are so proud!!
The annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards celebrate incredible classroom teachers, administrators, teams, volunteers, and school support personnel who have made lasting impacts on the students, families, and fellow educators in their school communities.
“We are thrilled to receive the news that Theresa Kelsey has been recognized as a 2024 Those Who Excel Award winner,” said Hillcrest Principal Ron Towner. “Mrs. Kelsey continually goes above and beyond for the students of Hillcrest High School and she embodies what it means to be a Hawk. Her commitment to education and the impact she has made with our students is truly commendable. Congratulations Mrs. Kelsey!”
Kelsey began her teaching career 12 years ago in Blue Island, and has been a member of the Bremen High School District 228 family for the last eight years. She chose to become a special education teacher because her passion is to help students find their amazing abilities, and to help them believe in themselves.
“The fact that a parent could take five minutes out of their day to do something like this for me makes me so proud of myself, and makes me so proud to make her proud of our profession,” Kelsey said. “Hillcrest is such a good school, full of amazing teachers and great students. This award makes me feel as though we teachers come to work everyday and it doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s hard for a person to say that they are proud of themselves, but I am so proud of this profession and the work we do everyday.”

Tinley Park High School staff has rallied together to support Project Fire Buddies, a local organization that holds a special place in their hearts. On February 10th, Special Education Teacher Lauren Brazel and School Counselor Shannon Gormley attended the Project Fire Buddies Gala, and in a gesture of solidarity, they decided to contribute a gift card basket on behalf of TPHS for the organization's raffle.
What started as a modest goal of $500 quickly surpassed all expectations. The TPHS staff's incredible generosity and community spirit have resulted in a staggering $2,000 in donations! The funds went towards creating a significant contribution to Project Fire Buddies, which provides crucial support to families facing challenges similar to that of Frankie, Brazel’s son, who battles Cerebral Palsy, HIE, Epilepsy, and CVI.
"Frankie was born 2 months early and suffered brain damage. We made the hard decision as a family to enter my son into palliative/hospice care to ensure the time we have with him is spent giving him the comfort he deserves,” Brazel said. “Project Fire Buddies has done so much for our family, and we wanted to be able to give back."

Oak Forest High School has earned the College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science A! Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have expanded girls’ access in AP computer science courses.
Seven out of eleven female students passed the AP exam in 2023. This group of students also include representatives of Tinley Park High School and Bremen High School. Although many have since graduated from Bremen High School District 228, the following students passed the AP exam last year: Cayden Booker (TPHS), Emilia Borovic, Isabel Cazares (BHS), Jillian Colangelo, Abbie Kruis, Madison Levsay, and Hailey Ostrom.
"We are so proud of the unique perspective our female students bring to the fields of Math and Science,” said Oak Forest High School Principal Jane Dempsey. “This is a recognition of our belief that anyone can succeed in any field. Tinley Park High School Coach Chris Vitt has been named the 2023 Athletico Coach of the Year! This is a national award, and we are extremely proud of Coach Vitt and all of his selfless efforts to serve the Tinley Park community!
The Athletico Coach of the Year Award recognizes coaches for all they do to serve their local communities, including sportsmanship, coaching success and classroom involvement. In honor of his achievements, Coach Vitt will receive an engraved award, a $250 Amazon gift card, and an Athletico prize package.
“It is a very cool honor to receive on behalf of Tinley Park High School. I believe it is really a program/school award more than an award just for me,” Vitt said. “It is a huge credit to our coaching and strength/conditioning staff, our teachers and, most importantly, our young men who have embraced the challenges that we put in front of them on a daily basis. We ask a lot of them and expect a lot of them, and they are now starting to expect a lot out of themselves, which is what it is all about.”
“I want people to realize that Tinley Park High School has a lot to offer student athletes and their families,” Vitt continued. “It would be hard to find facilities that are better than ours but what is even more powerful is that at Tinley Park we have amazing coaches and teachers in our building whose main goal is to help students reach their full potential academically and athletically. Tinley Park High School is one of the best kept secrets in the South Suburbs.”

In the spirit of thinking of others and giving back to the community, Mrs. Smith's honors British Literature classes created holiday greeting cards to send to residents who reside at Victory Centre of Sierra Ridge in Country Club Hills. As students concluded a brief thematic lesson on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” Smith incorporated lessons on the importance of community service and its role in fostering positive social change and individual development within self.
This project allowed students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world situations. It also reinforced the importance of civic responsibility and engagement. The outcome for this activity was to aid the students' sense of purpose and promote empathy within the area in which they live.
